First Grade Happenings
“Arrrgh” means I love you in pirate! We had so much fun learning about Bossy R this week! Your child turned into a pirate and went on a treasure hunt, sorted pirate coins by sound, read pirate stories, and played games to practice the sounds of /ar/ and /or/. Make sure to check out Seesaw for pictures of our Pirate Day!
Important Notes For The Week
Smart Watches
Smart watches have become quite the fad in first grade. While they are a lot of fun, students are not allowed to have phones or watches that take pictures, send texts, or make phone calls at school. Thank you for your partnership!
Saint Patrick’s Day Fun
To celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, your child may wear green to school on Wednesday.
What are we learning ?
Bible:
This week we will continue our study of Samuel, learning about the time God spoke to Samuel. Your child will hear that God will teach us if we listen to Him through His Word, and that we should decide to love and obey God all of our lives. Our Bible verse for the week comes from Psalm 119:11 ESV.
Math:
This week, we will explore addition and subtraction in word problems, as well as learning what defining attributes (a triangle has three sides and is closed) and non-defining attributes (color, size, orientation) of an object are.
Reading:
This week we will conclude our reading unit on story structure. We will have a test on Friday.
While reading with your child at home, ask the following questions:
Who is the main character?
What is the main character’s goal or problem?
What does the character do to try and reach the goal or solve the problem?
How does the story end?
Phonics:
Bossy r: er, ir, and ur
“er” as in fern
“ir” as in bird
“ur” as in nurse
We will have a spelling test on Thursday.
