Reading Comprehension Strategy: Check for Understanding

Good readers stop frequently to check for understanding by asking who and what.

How can you help your child with this strategy at home?

When reading to your child, stop periodically and say,

“Let’s see if we remember what I just read. Think about who the story was

about and what happened.” Do this 3 or 4 times throughout the story.

Ask your child the following questions:

Who did you just read about?

What just happened?

Do you understand what was read?

What do you do if you don’t remember?

Phonics:

S  blends- sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, sw, st, str, spl, scr, spr, squ, sch

Writing:

Does your sentence have SWAG? Our amazing authors are continuing to

work on creating WOW sentences. This week, we are learning  how to add "because" to

 our sentences as a way to expand our thoughts and create more interesting sentences.

 We also worked on using "SWAG" as a way to make great sentences:

 S = Starts with a capital letter,

W= Written neatly,

 A= A space between words,

 G= Given punctuation

For the week of October 12th- 16th

 First Grade Happenings

What a wonderful week we have had!  Thank you parents for helping us host a beautiful fairy tale ball! The kids had so much fun and looked adorable! Thank you for your partnership in the academic and spiritual development of your child. We count it a blessing to be your child’s teacher!

Important Notes For The Week

Book It

Reading is so important, and through the Book It program, our classes will continue to grow their reading skills over the next six months.  Beginning October 12th  through March 31st, first Grade classes will participate in the“Book It” reading program.  The mission of the Book It Program is to encourage reading outside of the classroom. The program is easy and fun!  When your child has reached the required monthly goal, they will be rewarded with a certificate for a free personal pizza at Pizza Hut. Each month your child can read toward our grade level Book It goal. Our grade level goal is 200 minutes for each month.  The monthly goal sheet for October is inside of this week’s Friday folder. Your child can color in one owl for every ten minutes he/she reads. Children can read more than ten minutes in a given time period and color in the number of owls accordingly (i.e. 30 minutes of reading one night = 3 owls).   Time spent reading for the 100 book challenge may be counted toward this program as well.  When the required reading is finished, send the form back to school, and your child’s teacher will send home the pizza certificate. A new monthly tracker will be distributed each month in the Friday folder. We are excited that we are participating and know your child will enjoy receiving a free pizza. This is OPTIONAL but highly encouraged to promote reading. Any student who completes ALL six months of reading will participate in a pizza party hosted by the first grade teachers.  We hope you will join us in our mission and encourage your child to read every day. The participation form for October Book It is inside the Friday folder.

Landform Study Guide

There is a study guide in the Friday folder for next Friday’s (10/16) landform test. We will post an answer key on Seesaw.

RAZ Kids

Please continue to have your child  read on RAZ Kids at home. This is an amazing resource. Your child should read first, then take the quiz, and listen to the story last. This can count towards the 100 Book Challenge as well as Book It.

What are we learning ?

Genesis 28:15 ESV

Students will learn about the life of Jacob,

that God will take care of us, and that we should not lie or steal.

Math:

Addition and Subtraction

Reading:

Tall Tales

Reading Accuracy Strategy:

Trade a Word/Guess a Word That Makes Sense

When readers encounter words they don’t know, but they understand

the gist of the text, they insert a word that makes sense in place of the

unknown word. This strategy provides the reader with the option to

continue reading by using a similar word for an unknown word. Reading continues and meaning stays intact.
