We had a wonderful week in first grade!  Our students had so much fun reading Tall Tales, creating landform cookies, and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Reading Comprehension Strategy: Check for Understanding

Good readers stop frequently to check for understanding by asking who and what.

How can you help your child with this strategy at home?

When reading to your child, stop periodically and say,

“Let’s see if we remember what I just read. Think about who the story was

about and what happened.” Do this 3 or 4 times throughout the story.

Ask your child the following questions:

Who did you just read about?

What just happened?

Do you understand what was read?

What do you do if you don’t remember?

Phonics:

S  blends- sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, sw, st, str, spl, scr, spr, squ, sch

We will not have a spelling test this week.

Writing:

Does your sentence have SWAG? Our amazing authors are continuing to

work on creating WOW sentences. This week, we are learning  how to add "because" to

 our sentences as a way to expand our thoughts and create more interesting sentences.

 We also worked on using "SWAG" as a way to make great sentences:

 S = Starts with a capital letter,

W= Written neatly,

 A= A space between words,

 G= Given punctuation
