March 29th - April 1st

   First Grade Happenings

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” - Audrey Hepburn “The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.” - Alfred Austin

We are having so much fun learning about the beautiful world God created as we study plant parts and plant needs. Please look inside this week’s Friday folder to find detailed directions and two seed packets for an at home gardening project. This gardening project will count as a science test grade.

What are we learning?

Bible:

This week we will be learning  the story of the resurrection.

Students will  learn that Jesus is God. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins.  Jesus did not sin; He was perfect. This week’s Bible verse comes from Matthew 28:6 ESV.

Math:

This week, we will wrap up Unit 7. The Unit 7 test will be on Thursday. A study guide will be sent home on Monday. An answer key for the study guide will be posted on Seesaw.

Reading:

This week we will finish our study of finding the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction. Students will be tested over identifying the main idea and supporting details on Wednesday.

March 22nd- 26th

 First Grade Happenings

“Capture a shadow, dance with the wind, stand in a rainbow, begin at the end.” (Mary Anne Radmacher) God created a beautiful world filled with sound and light! This was such a fun week experimenting with light and sound. Now, we are leaving physical science and beginning our study of living things!

What are we learning ?

Bible:

This week we will begin our study of the Easter story. Our verse for the week comes from John 11:25 ESV

Math:

This week, we will explore addition and subtraction in word problems, as well as learning what defining attributes (a triangle has three sides and is closed) and non-defining attributes (color, size, orientation) of an object are.

Reading:

This week we will begin our study of finding the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction.  We will review nonfiction text features and context clues.

Phonics:

We will be learning our final syllable type this week:  Consonant -le

The consonants that can join with the final -le include:

-ble, -cle, -dle, -fle, -gle, -kle, -ple, -tle, -stle, and -zle.

When dividing words into this syllable, we like to use the chant:  “ LE count back three”

When dividing the word with an -le ending, it will reveal an open or closed syllable first.  Therefore, it will tell you whether to make a long or short vowel sound.

For example:

ap/ple =  closed + -le syllable = short vowel sound

fa/ble = open + -le syllable = long vowel sound

(Our focus is on reading -le words, not necessarily spelling them at this time)

Week of March 8th - 12th!

 First Grade Happenings

We had a great week celebrating Read Across America! Reading opens the door to imagination, creativity, and innovation. As said by the famous Walt Disney, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”

 Important Notes For The Week

Report Cards

Please sign the copy that is inside of your child’s Friday folder and return. The original is for you to keep.

Reading Levels and RAZ Kids

A packet with your child’s reading level progression and RAZ Kids performance is inside of your child’s Friday folder.  It is important for your child to read on RAZ Kids at least three times a week. They need to read the story twice, take the quiz, and listen last. Thank you for your partnership with RAZ Kids at home!

Book It for February

Please turn in February’s Book It reading log if your child participated.

Math Study Guide

A study guide for Tuesday’s Unit 6 math test is inside of your child’s Friday folder. Please let us know if you have any questions. An answer key will be posted on Seesaw.

What are we learning ?

Bible:

This week we will hear how Hannah was obedient to God and how

God listened to her prayers. We will discuss how we can apply this to our lives, having confidence in knowing that God hears our prayers, too. Our verse for the week comes from Psalm 139:14.

Math:

We will have our Unit 6 assessment on Tuesday. A study guide for this assessment is inside of your child’s Friday folder.  We will begin Unit 7 this week, exploring addition and subtraction in word problems, as well as learning what defining (a triangle has three sides and is closed) and non-defining  (color, size, orientation) attributes of an object are.

Reading:

This week we will continue our reading unit on story structure.

While reading with your child at home, ask the following questions:

Who is the main character?

What is the main character’s goal or problem?

What does the character do to try and reach the goal or solve the problem?

How does the story end?

  Phonics:

Argh! Mateys! We will be studying Bossy R this week and will have a fun filled Pirate Day to practice the sounds of /ar/ and /or/ on Wednesday. We will not have a spelling test this week. As we begin our study on Bossy R sounds, this week we will practice “or” as in “fork” and “ar” as in “car.   Remember when the letter r follows a vowel, the vowel is usually forced to change its sound. That's why we call it the Bossy R.

For a word and picture matching game, print and cut out the cards in this

document.  It makes a good vocabulary lesson, too.
