Important Notes For The Week
A Seusstastic Celebration! On Tuesday, March 2nd
We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and join the nationwide celebration of reading by participating in National Read Across America Day! All Lower School students are invited to dress like a character from Dr. Seuss books.
March Book It and The 100 Book Challenge
March Book It forms will be inside of your child’s homework folders on Monday. Remember, you only have to read for 100 minutes each month! This can also be recorded on your 100 Book Reading Challenge form.
What are we learning ?
Bible
This week’s Bible verse comes from John 10:11, ESV. We will talk about what a parable is and how Jesus told parables to teach others about God. Students will hear three parables: The Parable of the Lost Sheep , The Lost Coin, and The Prodigal Son. Click on the links below!
Math
We will be wrapping up Unit 6 and preparing for the assessment. Thank you for partnering with us in math! Help your child memorize combinations of ten and doubles facts. Enjoy the videos below!
Reading
This week, we will begin our next reading unit on story structure.
The students will learn that when characters are faced with a problem or goal,
there may be multiple attempts that fail before solving the problem or reaching the goal.
While reading with your child at home, ask the following questions:
Who is the main character?
What is the main character’s goal or problem?
What does the character do to try and reach the goal or solve the problem?
How does the story end?
Phonics
This week in Phonics we will be reviewing and solidifying skills previously taught as well as introducing your student to Vowel Team Syllables. We will have a spelling test on Thursday, 3/4. Click here to review all of the phonics rules and spellings we have learned so far.
We are reviewing 3 syllable types and adding 1 more.We have learned: Closed Syllables, VCe Syllables, and Open Syllables. This week, your child will be learning about Vowel Team Syllables. We expose your child to these because it helps with chunking a multisyllable word into smaller parts. Understanding the syllable types helps the student know what kind of vowel sound (short vs. long) to make in each individual word chunk. We will be practicing this skill but not taking a grade. For a good description of all the syllable types we will be learning this year, parents can watch and learn with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0NZ9NUiOyE
Writing
We will continue writing character descriptions based on their appearance and actions.
Students are learning that describing a character is specific rather than general.
Science:
We will begin learning about light and sound.
