Week of February 8-12

 First Grade Happenings

We had so much fun celebrating the 100th day of school! Be sure to look on Seesaw for pictures from our fun day!

Important Notes For The Week

Valentine’s Day and Service Project

We will have a Valentine’s exchange on Wednesday, February 10th in the afternoon. We will enjoy a pizza lunch in the classroom that day. Before the big day,  your child will make their own personalized Valentine bag to hold their cards (this will be done in class).  Class Lists will be placed in homework folders on Monday. We are also excited to have an opportunity to spread the love of Christ to those who may not receive a Valentine. Your child will be making Valentines for the residents of an assisted living facility in Acworth.

February Book It

We are proud of our first grade readers! The form for February is inside of your child’s homework folder. Remember, you only have to read for 100 minutes each month!  This can also be recorded on your 100 Book Reading Challenge form.

What are we learning ?

Bible

This week we will be learning about the life of Ruby Bridges during Bible and connecting her life to scripture. There will not be a Bible verse to study this week.

Reading

We will continue our unit on Character, analyzing characters based on their appearance and actions. Ask your child about the books we read this week.

When reading with your child at home, ask them:

Who is in the story?

What does the character look like?

What does the character do?

How would you describe the character’s personality?

Phonics

This week in phonics we will review vowel teams learned so far.  Last week, we learned “oa” which is typically found in the middle of a word.  We also learned “oe” which typically comes at the end of the word.  We have learned 4 different spellings of the long o sound:   o-e as in bone; o as in clover; oa as in goat and oe as in toe. We will have a phonics test on Wednesday. We will not have a spelling test this week.

How can I help my child this week?

Call out a word from this chart:

Have your child build it with letter stamps, magnetic letters or even Alphabits cereal.  If he/she is unclear of whether to use o-e or oa, prompt them like this:

“Roach” has the o spelling like goat.  “Broke” has the o spelling like bone.

Writing

We will begin learning how to write a character description based on their appearance and actions.

Science:

We will continue our weather study. Your child will take on the role of meteorologist as they observe and evaluate weather using our classroom weather station.
