First Grade Happenings
We had such a fun week experimenting with magnets, reading and retelling The Snowy Day, playing math games, as well as learning about what it means to be a follower of Christ. We are so thankful for each day we have together at school!
What are we learning ?
Bible
We will be learning how we are all important to Jesus. Jesus loves the little children. Jesus can heal the sick and raise the dead. This week’s Bible verse comes from Matthew 6:21 ESV. Our Bible verse test over Matthew 6:21 ESV is on Friday.

Reading
Retelling - Ask your child about the book they are reading in their book club!
A great way to practice retelling at home is to have your child tell you five important details, in order, from a book they have read. We will be assessing the skill of retelling on Wednesday, January 27th.
100 Book Challenge and Book It
We encourage your child to read on RAZ Kids during the week. This can be recorded on your 100 Book Challenge Log as well as the Book It calendar.

Writing
Author’s Purpose
We are learning the differences between fiction and nonfiction.
An author writes a fictional story to entertain the reader. The purpose of nonfiction is to inform the reader. This week your child will be identifying nonfiction text features in a text. They will also compare and contrast fiction with nonfiction.
Science
We will begin our study of weather. Your child will take on the role of a meteorologist as they observe the weather and collect data using weather instruments. This is going to be so much fun!
